Snoring is very common, but for some people it can make their lives a misery. If you are a snorer then you may find that you wake up feeling tired. This can obviously make you irritable and affect performance at work. It may also affect your safety as a car driver.

What Causes Snoring?

Snoring is caused simply by a restriction in the airway while sleeping. In general terms, while you are awake the muscles around the airway stay taut and keeping the airway open and clear. However, when asleep these muscles become more floppy which can result in soft tissue restricting the airway and vibrating when sleeping. It is this vibration that causes the sound of sleeping.

Here are some factors that can make your snoring worse:

  • Overeating and/or lack of exercise - This can lead to a build up of fat around the neck causing the airway to be restricted during sleeping.
  • Alcohol and sleeping pills - These cause the muscles to relax more than normal during sleeping causing the oropharynx to collapse more readily causing snoring.
  • Sleeping position - While sleeping on your back, your tongue, your chin and any excess fatty tissue under your chin may relax back and squash your airway. This may be prevented by sleeping on your side.
  • Smoking - Causes irritation of the lining of the nasal cavity causing swelling and catarrh. This impairs breathing during sleeping.
    Allergies - Can cause congestion in the nasal airway leading to sleep disordered breathing and snoring.
  • Mouth breathing - Sleeping with your mouth open causes the inhaled air to hit the back of the throat 'head on' and can create enormous vibrations in the soft tissue.
  • Tongue base snoring - If you are a "tongue base snorer", this means that your tongue is dropping to the back of your throat causing an obstruction. This will prevent you from breathing properly and very often your partner will notice "pauses" in your breathing. This is due to the tongue blocking the airway, preventing the air from passing into your lungs. In trying to get past the obstruction the air vibrates the tongue or the throat tissues, causing snoring.

Stop Snoring With Nasal Strips

Nasal strips have a similar effect as nasal dilators in opening up the nostrils and improving breathing through the nose. The difference is that the strips stick on the outside of the nose. Some people prefer these to sleeping with a clip inside the nostrils.

There are some people who snore as a result their mouth falling open while asleep causing them to breathe through their mouth rather than their nose.
